The IONIQ 5 N, Hyundai’s first high-performance, all-electric vehicle under the N brand, had its world premiere at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in England this past summer. This launch marks Hyundai’s shift towards electrification, building on its racing success and the Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) found on the current IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6 EV. IONIQ 5 N serves as a technological flagship for Hyundai, showcasing advanced innovations to be shared across their EV lineup, enhancing competitiveness. According to Hyundai’s CEO, Jaehoon Chang, the N brand’s combination of technology and motorsport experience has resulted in a game-changing electric high-performance vehicle. IONIQ 5 N combines the standard model’s E-GMP platform with N’s motorsport expertise, ensuring it fulfills N’s performance pillars. Till Wartenberg, Vice President of N Brand and Motorsport, emphasized the aim to provide a fun driving experience, regardless of the powertrain, by closely listening to N fans and fine-tuning their first all-electric N model.
The IONIQ 5 N boasts rally-inspired handling with a dual-motor AWD system to support its “Corner Rascal” capabilities. These capabilities are achieved through structural enhancements, including extra welding points and adhesives, reinforced motor and battery mounts, and improved front and rear subframes. The vehicle also features World Rally Championship-inspired integrated drive axles (IDA) and 21-inch forged aluminum wheels to reduce unsprung mass.
To improve steering response and feedback, the IONIQ 5 N strengthens its steering column and employs a specially tuned N R-MDPS (Rack-Mounted Motor-Driven Power Steering) system with a higher steering ratio and enhanced torque feedback, resulting in a more direct and communicative steering experience.
The N Pedal is a unique software function designed to provide instant turn-in behavior and enhanced throttle sensitivity, prioritizing responsive handling over energy efficiency. It utilizes decelerative force to create sharper corner entry, inspired by Hyundai’s championship-winning i20 N WRCs.
The N Drift Optimizer helps maintain the drift angle by balancing various vehicle controls in response to real-time inputs. It includes the Torque Kick Drift function, which simulates the clutch kick action of rear-wheel-driven ICE vehicles, achieved through sophisticated electronic control technology.
Furthermore, the N Torque Distribution system allows for fully variable front and rear torque distribution, adjustable to 11 levels. An electronic limited-slip differential (e-LSD) at the rear axle optimizes cornering performance, while additional wheel sensors and a broader damping capacity with increased damper size expand the electronically controlled suspension’s performance range.
IONIQ 5 N, designed as an Everyday Sportscar, offers an exhilarating driving experience by incorporating state-of-the-art technology. It achieves this through two key features: N e-shift and N Active Sound +. N e-shift enhances the driving sensation by simulating the gearshifts of internal combustion engine (ICE) cars, providing precise power control and a more engaging driving experience.
Complementing N e-shift is N Active Sound +, which not only creates a futuristic EV sound but also replicates ICE-like engine and exhaust sounds. These features aim to address the lack of driver feedback often associated with electric vehicles, enhancing the overall driving experience and making it more akin to driving ICE cars.
N Active Sound + utilizes a 10-speaker system with three distinct sound themes, including ‘Ignition’ for N’s 2.0T engines, ‘Evolution’ inspired by high-performance models, and ‘Supersonic’ with variable volume during cornering, drawing inspiration from fighter jets. This sensory experience provides drivers with acoustic feedback to gauge power usage.
Additionally, IONIQ 5 N incorporates N Road Sense, which automatically recommends activating N Mode when detecting double-curved road signs, enhancing the driving pleasure. Furthermore, like the standard IONIQ 5, it features Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) technology, allowing drivers to use the EV’s high-voltage battery to recharge external devices, even when the vehicle is turned off.
IONIQ 5 N’s track performance is elevated by a range of technical enhancements. Its electric motors can achieve an impressive 21,000 RPM, delivering a formidable 478 kW / 650 PS with N Grin Boost engaged. These numbers are made possible by a two-stage inverter that boosts energy efficiency and draws power from the new 84 kWh battery.
Exclusive track-oriented features enhance performance further. N Grin Boost provides a 10-second power increment for exhilarating acceleration, while N Launch Control offers three traction levels for professional-grade starts. Track SOC calculates battery consumption per lap, optimizing race strategy.
Thermal management is a standout feature, with IONIQ 5 N showcasing superior resistance to heat-induced power degradation compared to rivals. This is achieved through an enhanced battery thermal management system, including improved cooling, motor oil cooling, and a battery chiller. N Battery Pre-conditioning optimizes battery cells for power efficiency before driving, with ‘Drag’ and ‘Track’ modes available.
The N Race feature empowers drivers with precise control over energy usage, allowing them to choose between ‘Endurance’ and ‘Sprint’ modes to manage power and temperature, optimizing performance on the racetrack.
The car is equipped with N-tuned brakes, featuring large front discs, monobloc calipers, and advanced airflow design for cooling efficiency. The regenerative braking system has been revamped for improved performance, and the N Brake Regen system, designed specifically for IONIQ 5 N, delivers exceptional decelerative force while minimizing brake fade, ensuring smooth and powerful braking during intense track driving. Left foot braking enables simultaneous operation of the brake and accelerator pedals for a seamless track experience.
